Eight members enjoyed a 12 mile cycle ride in sunny conditions to Brockfield Hall, via Scoreby, Gate Helmsley, Sand Hutton and the Breezy Knees café. Many thanks to Alan for organising and leading the ride.
Brockfield Hall is a fine Georgian house, built for Benjamin Agar between 1799 and 1807, by Peter Atkinson whose father was a partner of John Carr of York. It is owned by Mr and Mrs Simon Wood and we were given a very interesting tour of the house by Mrs Wood who is the daughter of the late Lord Martin Fitzalan Howard, who bought the house in 1951. He was a brother of Miles, 17th Duke of Norfolk and their mother was Baroness Beaumont. The entrance hall with its stone cantilevered staircase and the adjoining oval shaped drawing room with family portraits dating back hundreds of years were quite stunning. There were also many paintings by members of the Staithes Group of artists to be enjoyed in other rooms.
